Sitting there bored, wondering what you could be doing? Maybe you already cleaned your home and have nothing to do but possibly learn something new here. Well, we got something. We asked random people about their secret home maintenance tips (then tried to verify them) to see if they’re actually useful – and we’re sharing them here with you today. How many of these did you know?
Ice Cubes and Lemon Peels
Wondering how you’re supposed to ‘freshen’ up your garbage disposal. Well, according to one person throwing ice cubes down the disposal while it’s on (1x a month) can help sharper the blades. As for making it smell cleaner? Lemon peels.
Truth Checker: Not recommended
Apparently this home remedy doesn’t really have the veracity to the claim as it should. Ice cubes can cause more damage to the blades and not every disposal is lemon friendly either.
Sticky Notes
Sticky notes are great for a few things, but according to our local handyman they have another use case. Simply folding one and pasting it to the wall while you drill into it will catch all the dust that drops.
Truth Checker: True!
We witnessed this one live and didn’t even have to ask him to sweep anything up after. Make sure the sticky note is as close as possible while drilling for best results.
Dryer Sheets
Want to get rid of mice or pests around your home? Apparently you can put dryer sheets around your bed or other areas to repel them since they hate the smell that much.
Truth Checker: False
We didn’t get this one from an exterminator that’s for sure. While dryer sheets may make your room smell better, there’s 0 evidence that it’s an effective repellant of any rodents or bugs. One thing we do recommend with dryer sheets is using used ones to dust around the home – effective and adds a nice fragrance!
Kool Aid Mix
Want to be saying “OHHH YEAAH” by how clean your dishwasher is? According to online sources, they’re swearing by putting Kool Aid Mix, specifically the sugar-free lemonade version.
Truth Checker: Apparently Real?
After reading various posts and experiences – people do confirm this works – although they reiterate to make sure it’s sugar free and lemonade flavored! If you don’t have any kool aid mix on hand, vinegar works just as good if not better.
Shaving Cream Mirrors
Tired of getting out of the shower to see how you did only to see your blurry reflection in the fog? Before you shower next time, rub a smudge of shaving cream on the mirror and then wipe it off with a clean towel.
Truth Checker: True!
The shaving cream creates a barrier that doesn’t allow the fog to build up on the window creating a clean reflection. Tried and tested!
