Editor’s note: we’re not using any fancy research on this one so don’t take it too personally. These are all my opinions on what kind of person uses what kind of color in their home. Generalizations if you will – from decades of experience so they’re probably more true than not.
Ready to feel judged based on that paint color you promised would look but can’t get other’s too agree with. Have no fear, i’m not one to judge but i’m going to do it anyway. After all, I once painted an entire room two toned with a brown on the bottom and a beige on the top. Nobody liked it and it was a hectic time in my life and I had to live with that decision for the 4 years before I decided to go with a simpler baby blue. This blog isn’t about me though, its about the colors in our reader’s homes. Let’s get into it.
Red
If you’re painting ANYTHING red, I want to be as much as 500 yards away from you at all times. Personally, i’ve never seen anyone paint an entire interior red or even a single room and if I had I would’ve been wondering if I was in my final minutes. Sure red may make sense as an exterior color (if you live in a barn), but on the inside? It looks like Count Dracula’s lair every time. Seriously, unless you’re like so rich that your home has four living rooms and you wanted to make one red solely for Halloween – don’t. Please don’t.
White
Now we do need to make a distinction here: if your walls are ceiling white, as in your walls and ceiling are a single flat white in unison… please seek help. We can appreciate minimalism, but even in that blog we tried to talk you out of it. There needs to be some form of distinction between the ceiling and walls. Maybe a nice cream, or eggshell. Anything but a flat! I’m not going to judge white rooms too heavily because it does mean that you’re clean. I mean, it better mean that. Managing a white room is like inviting people over with microscopes to inspect how you live – every piece of dirt you’ve ever accumulated and not cleaned is going to be present. We respect the decision on white rooms.
Black
We’re not even going to here. You know what you’ve done already if you made this decision.
Blue
We can get behind blue – as long as you keep it light and preferably out of sight. A blue bedroom? Chefs kiss. A blue kitchen? Hmm, we can understand it, but it wouldn’t be our first option. Blue is a calming presence though, so we’re not going to get angry about it. It’s not standard enough to have a blue kitchen that we almost respect it, but it’s unsettling enough for us to wonder if you’re doing ok.
